Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday criticised the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's recent resolution on Georgia, saying it demonstrated that the body had “sunk to the level of an ordinary lobbyist like Joe Wilson” and had undermined public trust in the organization.
In his remarks, Papuashvili described the resolution as an example of international organizations being turned into political instruments.
He argued that the document contradicted the OSCE's own election observation findings and reflected political bias rather than the organization's stated values.
“In general, this resolution is a good example of what it means when international organizations become political instruments. That is why virtually every international organization has lost its function today and has become an outlet for various groups to vent political resentment. With this resolution, the OSCE falsified its own conclusion - one thing is written in the election observation report, and another in the resolution. It turns out that, through this conclusion, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly has sunk to the level of Joe Wilson, an ordinary lobbyist. This resolution is detached from values and has undermined the Georgian people's trust in the OSCE”, he noted.
Papuashvili also addressed the prospects for future cooperation with the OSCE, saying Georgia remained open to engagement but that the organization itself had to restore its credibility.
“We remain open to cooperation with everyone. However, when they are damaging themselves, there is little we can do. When they show the Georgian people that they are under the influence of groups hostile and unfriendly toward Georgia, we cannot help them. The OSCE itself must work to restore its reputation. The more it restores that reputation, the closer our cooperation will be”, he concluded.
