Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday said recent remarks by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas was the most shameful statement, which highlighted how much Kallas strayed from European values and had no idea what democracy meant.
Papuashvili was responding to remarks by Kallas, who said there were certain difficulties regarding Georgia because the European Union had no contact with the Georgian Government and wanted to support the Georgian people rather than the Government.
In his remarks, Papuashvili noted that any attack on the Georgian people by any representative of Brussels would have an adequate response from the Government.
“One thing must be clearly stated - any person who uses the formula that they support the Georgian people, but not the Government, this person:
- Does not recognize democracy, (therefore, Ms. [Kaja] Kallas’s statement is anti-democratic);
- This person does not respect Georgia's sovereignty, that the Georgian people should choose their own Government;
- Such a person considers the Georgian people to be an incompetent crowd that does not even have the ability to choose the Government and needs Kallas’s guardianship.
At this level, he sees the statehood of the Georgian people as something that needs to be led by the hand and taught to be smart”, the Speaker said.
“This is the most shameful statement, which emphasises how far Ms. Kallas has strayed from European values and has no idea what democracy means, and this is a great danger when the European Union is represented in foreign relations by a person who has anti-democratic thinking. That is why the US Secretary of State does not meet him and he is not included in any dialogue of international importance. You’ve seen, it is planned to reorganise this agency, because it is a great merit of Ms. Kallas that the European Union has such a bold foreign policy. We always refrain from critical comments, but will there be an attack on the Georgian people from any representative of Brussels? - There will be an adequate response to any such attack”, he concluded
