Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili on Monday criticised EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, saying it is regrettable that the bloc’s top diplomat has openly stated that she does not intend to cooperate with the Georgian Government, which was elected based on the democratic will of the Georgian people.
In a social media message, the Foreign Minister noted that genuine partnership is based on dialogue rather than distancing.
Botchorishvili’s comments came in response to Kallas’ remarks that the EU does not want to support the Government but rather wants to support the Georgian people.
“It is regrettable that the EU’s top diplomat openly states that she does not intend to cooperate with the Georgian Government, which was elected based on the democratic will of the Georgian people, while at the same time speaking about supporting those same people”, she said.
“The foundation of a true partnership is dialogue, not distancing oneself from relations”, the FM added.
Botchorishvili further highlighted that Georgia remained committed to cooperation with the European Union based on mutual respect and understanding, in line with the interests of our citizens and our common European future.
“However, we cannot remain silent when the democratic choice of the Georgian people is ignored. Democracy means respecting voters’ decisions - not only when they are politically convenient”, she concluded.
