Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister, on Monday commented on the developments in Georgia and the country’s relations with the European Union, saying the EU should continue engaging with Georgia rather than imposing its views.
In his remarks, Bettel stressed that decisions about Georgia’s future must be made by the Georgian people themselves, noting that the outcome of the country’s elections is an established fact and that, regardless of differing opinions, the ruling Georgian Dream party won the vote.
He further argued that cutting off communication with the Georgian authorities would make it impossible to find solutions.
“I always say they know exactly what they need to do. It is their decision. But if we don't talk to them, we won’t change anything. We should not lecture them. They know the rules, and they know the direction their legislation should take. We should not impose our views. We should make proposals, and the Georgian people must decide. They won the election - whether we like it or not, that is a fact”, the Foreign Minister said.
“If we stop talking to the Georgians, we will never be able to find a solution. Sometimes the impression is good, sometimes it is bad. As we would say in Greek, it is a difficult situation”, Bettel concluded.
