Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said that the country had no alternative but to firmly defend its sovereignty, as yielding to external pressure could threaten not only the country’s economy and traditional values but also its very statehood.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that attempts by “deep state” to influence political developments in Georgia have failed despite resolutions, public statements, and alleged efforts to foment unrest.
“Alongside the erosion of national, religious, and personal identity, it is important to highlight the severe economic trends. We have often noted that while the European Union accounted for 30% of the global economy in 2008, today that figure has fallen to below 18%”, he said.
“Therefore, if anyone believes that the Georgian Government has a choice and that, instead of confronting absurd resolutions and revolution attempts, it would be better to follow the rules imposed by the ‘deep state’ - as the United National Movement Government and Mikheil Saakashvili once did - they should understand that such a choice could cost Georgia not only its economy and traditional value system but also its sovereignty. In Georgia’s case, pursuing any policy other than one based on national interests poses an existential threat to the country”, the PM continued.
Kobakhidze further added that if Georgia were to pursue a non-sovereign policy, the very question of the country’s existence as a state would be placed on the agenda, emphasising that “this is evidenced by repeated calls for Georgia to open a second front”.
“Therefore, Georgia has no alternative but to firmly defend its sovereignty. The fact is that neither unfair resolutions, nor absurd statements, nor attempts at revolution have enabled the ‘deep state’ to achieve its desired outcome in Georgia - especially considering that in 2024 and 2025, the Georgian people firmly supported Georgian Dream despite all these developments”, he concluded.
