Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said that the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s adoption of The Hague Declaration, including a resolution on Georgia, once again demonstrated that without deep and comprehensive reform, such organisations risk becoming mere instruments of political intrigue and revenge rather than promoters of peace and cooperation.
In his remarks, Papuashvili noted that the decision once again demonstrated that international organisations of this kind require deep and comprehensive reform in order to maintain their relevance and credibility.
“The fact that the rules-based international order has been undermined is evidenced not so much by the outbreak of new wars, but by the transformation of international organisations into instruments of political warfare. We are witnessing this, including in Georgia's case, across various international platforms, where such organisations are being misused to serve political vendettas. It is regrettable that these organisations allow such political groups to use them as instruments in their hands”, he said.
The Speaker argued that organisations established to promote peace and cooperation are increasingly being used to spread what he described as false narratives and to exert political pressure on states.
“Today, we are effectively seeing that organisations whose purpose should have been to promote and encourage peace and cooperation have instead become initiators of fabricating and spreading false narratives, fuelling conflicts, and taking steps against the sovereignty of states”, Papuashvili noted.
He also noted that the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s decision highlighted the need for institutional reform.
“Therefore, I believe that today's decision by the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly has once again exposed the fact that, without deep and comprehensive reform, organisations of this kind have no future and are turning into nothing more than instruments of political intrigue and political revenge”, he concluded.
