Irakli Cheishvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday said the outgoing German Ambassador Peter Fischer had done everything possible to damage relations between Georgia and Germany during his three-year tenure, effectively destroying the previously strong bilateral partnership.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Cheishvili recalled the traditionally friendly 30-year relations between Georgia and Germany and expressed gratitude for Germany’s support.
“We have 30 years of relations with Germany. We are grateful to Germany. It has always stood by us as a partner. During the last three years that Fischer was Ambassador to Georgia, he did everything to damage our relationship. He practically destroyed our relationship”, he said.
He accused Fischer of using hateful language, remaining silent on critical events such as the October 4 developments, and consistently working to undermine bilateral ties.
“We well remember Fischer’s statements, we remember his silence on the October 4 events, we remember the language of hatred he used throughout these three years. During this time, he only harmed our relations with Germany and ultimately achieved his goal. The German Ambassador left Georgia without having farewell meetings with the President, the Parliament, or the Prime Minister”, Cheishvili noted.
Cheishvili further expressed hope that the appointment of a new Ambassador would allow relations to be reset and returned to their former positive level.
“I express the hope that after the appointment of the new Ambassador, relations with Germany will be reset and return to their previous level”, he concluded.
Fischer officially announced the completion of his diplomatic mission in Georgia in a social media post on Tuesday.
