Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said on Monday that the Special Penitentiary Service would act in line with doctors’ recommendations regarding the health condition of jailed opposition politician Elene Khoshtaria, calling on all sides to avoid politicising the issue.
Commenting on what he described as speculation surrounding the health of Khoshtaria, Papuashvili said the process was being handled as transparently as possible, while noting that medical information remains personal and sensitive in nature.
He noted that, alongside penitentiary medical staff, Khoshtaria was also being visited by her personal physicians.
“Whatever decisions the doctors make, the Penitentiary Service will act accordingly. Excessive politicisation of this issue will benefit no one and never has”, Papuashvili said.
He added that anyone concerned about the health of Khoshtaria should rely on medical assessments and doctors’ recommendations, stressing that the state provides all inmates with free medical care.
“The state ensures free medical services and healthcare for every prisoner. As in the case of every other inmate, full medical assistance is being provided in this case as well”, he concluded.
