Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday said that meetings in Luxembourg focused on regional security, Georgia’s EU integration, and efforts to restore dialogue with the European Union.
Samkharadze made the remarks following discussions with the Chairs of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committees of the Luxembourg Parliament, as well as meetings at the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We had a very interesting discussion on issues related to bilateral relations, as well as the security situation in our region. Members of the Luxembourg Parliament had questions on these topics, and we provided them with comprehensive information about what is happening both in Georgia and in the region, what role Georgia plays in the peacebuilding process in the South Caucasus, what challenges Georgia faces due to Russian occupation, and what the issues are in relations between us and the European Union”, he said.
He also noted that the delegation asked Luxembourg to raise the issue of resuming dialogue with the European Commission.
“We also asked the Luxembourg side to raise with the European Commission the issue of resuming dialogue with Georgia. The meeting was quite interesting, generated significant interest, and a large number of members attended it”, Samkharadze noted.
The official highlighted that Georgia was ready to engage in any format and discuss critical issues, including the transparency law that led to the suspension of EU dialogue.
“During the visit and also here, we asked the Luxembourg side to support the resumption of dialogue with Georgia. We are ready to resume dialogue in any format. We are also ready to discuss critical issues, including the transparency law, which became the formal reason for suspending dialogue between the EU and Georgia. We believe that the Luxembourg side treated our position quite constructively, and we hope that when meetings among member states are held, Luxembourg will support the resumption of dialogue with Georgia”, he said.
Regarding bilateral relations, Samkharadze noted that there were no problems between the two countries.
“As for bilateral relations, we do not have any problems with each other. On the contrary, political and economic relations are developing, and we hope that in the near future we will host a Luxembourg delegation in Georgia. It was also confirmed during our visit that the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament will visit Luxembourg in the autumn”, he concluded.
