The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has detained six law enforcement officers on charges of exceeding official authority through the use of violence.
The arrest follows a joint investigation conducted by the Investigative Division of the Shida Kartli and Mtskheta-Mtianeti Regional Prosecutor's Office, in close coordination with the General Inspection of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to the investigation, on May 27, 2026, in the city of Gori, the accused officers violently exceeded their official powers while detaining a citizen. As a result of the physical violence, the victim’s substantial rights were violated, and they sustained health injuries.
“Based on the evidence obtained during the swift and immediate investigation, the suspects were detained on May 28”, the Prosecutor's Office stated.
If found guilty, the offence carries a prison sentence ranging from 5 to 8 years.
The Prosecutor's Office emphasised that due to the high public interest surrounding the case, they will periodically update the public as the investigation progresses.
