The Constitutional Court of Georgia on Tuesday referred a petition seeking the prohibition of several major opposition parties to its Plenum for full consideration, according to a ruling published by the court.
The constitutional submission, filed by 88 members of the Georgian Parliament, challenges the legality of several opposition parties and seeks a ruling on the constitutionality of their activities, potentially paving the way for their prohibition.
The court determined that Constitutional Submission No. 1979 will be examined by the Plenum of the Constitutional Court rather than by one of its chambers.
“Constitutional Submission No. 1979 - the constitutional submission of 88 members of the Parliament of Georgia concerning the constitutionality and potential prohibition of the activities of the political parties Unity - National Movement, Coalition for Change - Gvaramia, Melia, Girchi, Droa, Strong Georgia - Lelo, For the People, For Freedom!, Federalist Party, and For Georgia - shall be referred to the Plenum of the Constitutional Court of Georgia for consideration”, the ruling said.
The court noted that the decision is final and cannot be appealed.
“This ruling is final and is not subject to appeal or review. The ruling shall be published on the website of the Constitutional Court of Georgia within 15 days and shall be sent to the parties and the Legislative Herald of Georgia”, the statement said.
