Georgian State Security Service detains three in terrorism-related investigation

The state security service of Georgia has detained three Georgian citizens as part of an ongoing investigation into joining a foreign terrorist organisation and providing assistance to terrorist activities.

Lasha Maghradze, the first deputy head of the service, stated that counterterrorism units and the special operations department carried out a large-scale overnight operation in villages of the Pankisi Gorge.

Authorities said the suspects have joined the ranks of the terrorist organisation known as the Islamic State and were receiving instructions from abroad to carry out terrorist-related activities.

Investigators also allege that the individuals attempted to establish a so-called jamaat supporting the terrorist group in Pankisi Gorge and were involved in efforts to recruit others into terrorist activities. They held covert meetings in various locations and engaged in propaganda promoting extremist ideology.

During the investigation, which included court-authorised covert surveillance and operational measures, authorities also seized firearms, explosive materials, ammunition, mobile phones, computers, electronic storage devices, an ISIS flag, symbolic items, and personal documents.

The case is being investigated under Articles 328 and 236 of the Georgian Criminal Code. The offences carry a possible prison sentence of 10 to 17 years.

The investigation is ongoing, with officials working to identify additional individuals involved and to bring them to justice.
