The Georgian State Security Service on Saturday confirmed that former defence minister Tina Khidasheli, Gubaz Sanikidze, an MP for the opposition United National Movement party, and Giorgi Kandelaki, the former United National Movement government official, have been summoned for questioning regarding recent public statements and publications containing claims about foreign recruitment in Georgia, with some statements containing accusations or hints related to terrorism.
The Service stressed that none of the individuals who made such public statements have ever provided any information to law enforcement authorities.
“We are closely monitoring and examining both the content of these statements, which contradict the factual circumstances, as well as the motives of their authors in accusing Georgia of such matters, especially against the backdrop of ongoing military actions in the region and considering that none of the authors of these statements have ever provided any information to law enforcement agencies”, the statement said.
The State Security Service further noted that an investigation was underway, during which the authors would be questioned on all relevant aspects. The three individuals have chosen to be questioned in court, in the presence of a judge.
“An investigation has been launched, and the authors of these statements will be asked questions in all directions. They will also be given the opportunity, within the framework of the investigation, to point to any specific facts”, the statement noted.
Following statements by Tina Khidasheli, Giorgi Kandelaki, former United National Movement government official, has joined what officials describe as an orchestrated disinformation campaign against Georgia. Kandelaki’s name has been linked to another study that critics say is built on false claims and levels dangerous accusations against the country. Even some opposition figures have called on him to demonstrate greater responsibility.
A report published by the Hudson Institute and authored by Kandelaki together with Luke Coffey has been described by government representatives as part of a coordinated effort to damage Georgia’s international reputation and undermine domestic stability.
In addition, Major General Vakhtang Kapanadze spoke on one of the television channels about strategic facilities that could potentially become targets for Iran and discussed what he would do if he were in the position of the Iranian authorities.
Amid ongoing developments in the Middle East, another critical article about Georgia was also published in The Hill, titled “Georgia Becomes a Hub for Iran to Evade Sanctions”.
Former defence minister Tina Khidasheli, who is also the chairperson of the NGO Civil Idea, stated that a so-called “university” for terrorists is operating in Georgia.
