New information has surfaced regarding the case of transporting the explosive substance hexogen from Ukraine into Georgia.
At a special briefing held by the State Security Service of Georgia, officials stated that the explosives were handed over to the driver of a truck on Ukrainian territory by Ukraine’s security services.
The investigation is examining whether there are links between this case, the upcoming October 4 elections in Georgia, and plans announced by radical groups.
“Two Ukrainian citizens have been detained in possession of 2.4 kilograms of hexogen. The substance entered Georgia via Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Following the arrests, a series of investigative and operational measures were carried out within the next 36 hours”, the Service said.
The agency said that evidence indicates the driver of a Mercedes truck received the explosive from Ukraine’s Security Service. This detail is also supported by testimony from one of the detainees, who claimed he was tasked with delivering the substance into Georgia and handing it over to a specific person.
Although one of the detainees stated that the final destination of the explosives was Russia, where they were allegedly meant to be used in an operation codenamed “Web 2”, investigators and operational materials so far point to a different destination - a residential building in Tbilisi’s Avlabari district.
“Therefore, alongside other investigative directions, we are actively working to establish whether there is a connection between this case, the October 4 elections, and the plans announced by radical groups”, the official said at the briefing.
