Geka Geladze, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, on Wednesday announced that 34 individuals - including both Georgian and foreign nationals - were arrested on drug-related charges during a large-scale police operation conducted across dozens of locations nationwide late night.
“This was another successful police operation. Most of the detainees were involved in the illegal sale of various types of narcotic substances, while others were charged with illegal possession of large and especially large quantities of drugs. Some are identified as major drug dealers”, the Minister said.
“The investigation revealed that the suspects were part of organised drug distribution schemes, using internet applications and social media platforms to coordinate sales and place drugs at predetermined drop-off points. The narcotics were allegedly intended for distribution in nightclubs and entertainment venues across Georgia”, he noted.
Geladze further added that undercover purchases and covert audio-video recordings had been conducted as part of the investigation, based on court-issued warrants.
Searches of the suspects’ homes and personal belongings uncovered:
- Large quantities of heroin, cocaine, suboxone, methadone, alpha-PVP, and other substances
- Packaging materials used for drug distribution
- Cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales
- Unregistered firearms and ammunition
“If convicted, the suspects face up to 20 years or life imprisonment”, Geladze said.
He concluded by expressing his gratitude to all police officers who “tirelessly work to combat drug trafficking in the country, thereby saving many citizens from the severe consequences of addiction”.
