Georgian Parliament Speaker accuses German Ambassador Peter Fischer of mocking Donald Trump and Liz Truss in “deep state remarks”

Georgian Parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday criticised Peter Fischer, the German ambassador to the country, accusing him of arrogance, disrespect, and severely damaging the three-decade-long friendship between Tbilisi and Berlin.

Papuashvili’s remarks came in response to a recent interview where the ambassador expressed his frustration with the “unfair criticism” he faces from high-ranking Georgian officials.

Speaking to reporters, Papuashvili condemned the German diplomat’s tone, specifically highlighting Fischer’s dismissive remarks regarding the concept of the deep state.

“In his characteristically sarcastic tone, he spoke about the deep state - saying things like, “Where is it? It wasn’t in the room, I went into the bathroom and it wasn't there”. He is essentially mocking the Georgian people”, Papuashvili said.

The speaker added that the ambassador’s sarcasm extended far beyond Georgia’s borders.

“At the same time, he is mocking Americans, President Trump, and former British prime minister Liz Truss, who have also spoken about the deep state in their respective countries. It is deeply unfortunate to see such a high-and-mighty attitude from a German citizen toward other nations”, he continued.

Papuashvili did not hold back on Fischer’s legacy in Georgia, claiming the ambassador would be remembered for supporting radical elements rather than diplomacy.

“The saddest part is that this individual collapsed 30 years of Georgia-Germany friendship in just three years. He has brought it to a point where the representative of Germany in Georgia is now associated with facilitating, inciting, and supporting violence, disinformation, and propaganda”, the speaker stressed.

Papuashvili further rejected Fischer's framing of his diplomatic role, stating that the ambassador had mistakenly conflated his position with that of “a guest who bursts into your house and incites violence”.
