Speaking at the 13th session of the World Urban Forum in Baku on Monday, Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze highlighted his government's active collaboration with the United Nations and international partners to drive balanced and inclusive development across all regions of Georgia.
In his remarks, the prime minister underscored his government's commitment to equity, ensuring that those in rural and mountainous regions fully share in the benefits of modern infrastructure, premium public services, and emerging economic opportunities.
“Our policies also prioritize support for young families, eco-migrants and residents of mountainous regions. Through targeted state programs and innovative financial mechanisms, we seek to improve housing accessibility and create equal opportunities for development across all regions of Georgia”, he said.
“A city is a vessel for a nation’s identity. Our initiatives are guided by a commitment to the preservation of traditional Georgian architectural heritage. We believe that modernization must not come at the cost of history. By integrating traditional architectural elements into contemporary urban planning, we are asserting our cultural security, building cities that honor our past while functioning for our future”, Kobakhidze continued.
He further highlighted that narrowing the rural-urban divide remains a key priority within Georgia’s sustainable development policy.
“As we continue our transition toward an upper middle-income economy with stronger institutions and steady economic growth, the sustainable development of regions remains at the core of our national priorities”, the prime minister added.
Kobakhidze emphasised the importance of ensuring that rural and mountainous communities benefit equally from modern infrastructure, quality public services and new economic opportunities.
“Through inclusive and regionally balanced policies, we aim to strengthen local communities, reduce disparities between urban and rural areas, and create sustainable conditions for long-term development throughout the country”, he said.
“Georgia remains firmly committed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda. We stand ready to further strengthen cooperation with our international partners in advancing safe, inclusive and resilient human settlements for present and future generations”, the PM concluded.
