Georgian foreign minister Maka Botchorishvili on Friday said that Georgia remains fully committed to supporting the Ukrainian people and upholding international norms, including respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of both Georgia and Ukraine.
Speaking to journalists in Moldova, Botchorishvili emphasised that Georgia maintains a consistent and firm position regarding its support for Ukraine.
“Georgia is in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and supports international norms, as well as the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia and Ukraine. We will, of course, always remain loyal to this position”, she said.
Journalists asked why Georgia did not join a resolution of the Council of Europe committee of ministers concerning the establishment of a special tribunal on crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.
In response, Botchorishvili said Georgia’s decision was based on the current political environment and security considerations. She noted that certain attitudes from some member states, including EU countries, do not allow Georgia to take steps that could potentially create additional risks for the country.
“Regarding the decision taken within the Council of Europe, the attitudes of some member states, including EU members, do not give us the possibility or luxury to take decisions that could create additional risks and threats for our country or place Georgia in a situation of increased risks or challenges”, the minister explained.
“The attitude we are seeing today from a number of member states truly needs to be reconsidered. Clarity is needed regarding what attitude exists toward Georgia and its positions, as we carry a very large responsibility before our society - first and foremost, in terms of maintaining security, peace, and stability in the country”, Botchorishvili concluded.
