Dimitris Avramopoulos, the former European commissioner for migration, home affairs, and citizenship, has expressed strong support for Georgia’s European aspirations, telling journalists that he has long backed the country and will continue to do so in the future.
Avramopoulos recalled his pivotal role in the granting of visa-free travel for Georgian citizens and emphasized his long-standing commitment to the nation’s progress.
“I believe in Georgia’s European path. I supported you a long time ago, and I will continue to support your country in the future”, Avramopoulos stated, noting that despite no longer holding an official EU office, he remains a steadfast ally of Georgia.
The former Commissioner described Georgia’s status as a European nation as undeniable. He fondly recalled his visit to Tbilisi during the visa liberalisation process, remarking on the visible public enthusiasm for the union.
“Georgia is a European country, and that is a very simple fact. At the time when I contributed to granting visa-free travel for Georgia, I remember I was also in Tbilisi, and in my life I have not seen as many European flags on the streets of any capital as I saw in Georgia. I no longer work in the European Union, but I always stand by Georgia. Georgia deserves a European future, and it will definitely have it”, he concluded.
