European Parliament member Thierry Mariani on Sunday drew a sharp comparison between the European Commission and the Soviet Union’s Politburo, claiming that the EU often operates in a centralised and undemocratic manner despite promoting democratic values.
“You need to understand how the European Union really works. If you go to Brussels, you will see signs about democracy everywhere in the city. Nevertheless, the European Commission often reminds me of the Soviet Union’s Politburo. Instead of everyone, 27 people make decisions for five years. If you agree with the policies of this modern Politburo, then you receive their support, funding, and goodwill. But if you intend to pursue policies based on your country’s national interests, then you will face major challenges”, Mariani said in an interview with Imedi TV.
The MEP also commented on the issue of suspending diplomatic visas for Georgian diplomats, calling it a political message aimed at damaging the reputation of Georgia’s Government.
“The suspension of diplomatic visas for Georgian diplomats is a message, and also an attempt to discredit Georgia’s authorities in the eyes of the population. We see exactly the same approach toward Hungary. The European Commission clearly signals that if Hungary elects Viktor Orbán once again, the country will lose funding”, Mariani concluded.
