The European Union is seeking to open a new front against Russia and is prepared, as in the case of Ukraine, to send Georgians “into the fire”, thereby destroying even the last remnants of trust, said on Wednesday a member of the European Parliament Ruth Firmenich during a plenary debate on the democratic situation in Georgia.
In her speech, Firmenich stated that the EU’s objective in Georgia was “regime change”.
“What would happen in Brussels if a group of demonstrators violently stormed government headquarters? How would you react if politicians from a former ruling party promised each police officer $200,000 not to follow orders? This is exactly what happened in Tbilisi, and it is being celebrated in this chamber. This is unimaginable”, Firmenich said.
She further added that the European Union was applying double standards toward Georgia, which, she argued, raises doubts that the issue is genuinely about the rule of law, democracy, or human rights.
Firmenich further warned that the EU was seeking to open a new front against Russia and was willing to sacrifice Georgians in the process, as it did with Ukrainians, undermining trust entirely.
“Those who truly believe in democracy and the rule of law would turn to diplomacy, not regime change”, she concluded.
