US Senator Rand Paul, the Chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee of the US Senate, spoke out against proposed congressional legislation targeting Georgia, asserting that decisions about the country’s future belong solely to the Georgian people.
In his interview with Georgian-born journalist Elizabeth Lane, Paul criticised efforts in Washington to pressure Georgia and expressed strong opposition to the so-called MEGOBARI Act.
“Right now, Congress has legislation trying to sanction Georgia if Georgia makes decisions that people in Washington perceive to be pro-Russian. When did it become the business of Washington to make these decisions?” he said.
He stressed that only Georgian citizens had the legitimacy to determine their national interests.
“The only people who can determine what is in the self- interest of Georgia are Georgians. The United States cannot decide what is best for Georgia. So, I am adamantly opposed to this legislation and will do whatever I can to stop this legislation”, Paul concluded.
