The German Federal Government has responded to questions submitted by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party regarding Peter Fischer, the country’s Ambassador to Georgia.
Berlin confirms that Fischer held a meeting with opposition representatives in Georgia. However, the German Government declined to provide any concrete details about the encounter.
In response to a question about which opposition groups and politicians Ambassador Fischer met with over the past ten weeks, the Government stated that “during the mentioned period, the German Ambassador met with one representative of the opposition party For Georgia”.
When asked about the purpose of these meetings, the German Government explained that the goal was to “obtain information about the ongoing developments in the country”.
Regarding questions about the topics discussed and the timing of these meetings - just weeks before the local elections in Georgia - the Government replied that “the Federal Government does not comment on the content of confidential discussions”. It also clarified that “the meeting took place after the local self-government elections, held on October 4”.
