Concerns surrounding the activities of Peter Fischer, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, have now reached Germany itself.
The issue has drawn the attention of the country’s most popular and high-ranking political force, Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is demanding answers from the Federal Foreign Office.
The inquiry appeared on the official website of the Bundestag, following reports about Fischer’s recent diplomatic engagements in Georgia.
After the Ambassador was summoned to Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the AfD parliamentary group submitted a formal “minor inquiry” to the federal government. The faction requested clarification on whether the German ambassador had met with opposition groups or politicians in Georgia, as well as with government officials.
Additionally, the AfD asked the government to confirm whether reports are true that Ambassador Fischer rented property belonging to opposition leader Mamuka Khazaradze.
Below are the key questions the AfD posed to the German federal government:
- According to the federal government’s information, is it true that Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, Mr. Peter Fischer, rented an expensive property from opposition leader Mamuka Khazaradze?
- Which opposition groups or politicians has Ambassador Fischer met with in Georgia over the past ten weeks?
- Were there specific reasons or purposes for holding these meetings, and if so, what were they?
- Why were these meetings held just weeks before Georgia’s upcoming local elections?
- How many times has Ambassador Fischer met with representatives of the Georgian government over the past twelve weeks?
- In the federal government’s assessment, do these meetings with opposition figures comply with Article 41(1), second sentence, of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations?
