Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday said Georgia had never stated that it was abandoning its path toward European Union integration.
The remarks come after Denmark, which currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, announced that Georgia will not be invited to an EU meeting scheduled for September. The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs justified the decision by claiming that the Georgian Government has chosen to freeze the EU integration process until 2028 - a claim strongly rejected by Georgian officials.
In his remarks, Kadagishvili criticised what he called ongoing “verbal blackmail” against Georgia and claimed that Denmark’s latest statement reflected the continuation of a broader Western policy aimed at undermining Georgia’s sovereignty and political process.
“Georgia has never stated that it is refusing EU integration, and the Danish Government has no official statement from the Georgian authorities indicating otherwise. Yet they persist with this destructive policy, which unfortunately has been evident throughout recent periods - before, during, and after elections. This verbal blackmail continues. That is the real motive and essence behind Denmark’s statement”, he said.
