A high-ranking parliamentary delegation of the ruling Georgian Dream party on Sunday conducted official meetings in China to deepen strategic cooperation.
The delegation engaged in multisectoral discussions with China’s ruling party, the Chinese People’s Congress, the Centre for Language and Education Cooperation (CLEC), the China Chamber of Trade and Investment Promotion (CCTIP), Shenzhen municipal authorities, and leading technology corporations.
The meetings focused on consolidating inter-party mechanisms and advancing cooperation in education, agriculture, and economic development, aligning with Georgia’s socio-economic interests.
Georgia’s geostrategic role as a key hub in the transcontinental “Middle Corridor” linking Europe and Asia was a central theme.
Since 2022, the country’s transit infrastructure has seen a 30 percent increase in cargo turnover, underscoring its growing importance.
The European Union recognises the corridor’s international significance, while for China, stronger ties with Georgia offer an alternative route to European markets, particularly amid restricted northern transport routes.
Giorgi Volski, the First Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, noted that “the importance of the Middle Corridor has been discussed for a long time, but today this topic is extremely significant for everyone - both for the East and the West - and connecting these two markets couldn't happen without the Middle Corridor”.
He added that “Georgia’s geopolitical location meets the standards required for the development of the historic Silk Road, and significant changes will occur throughout Georgia, which will primarily have a positive impact on the economic and social conditions of the Georgian people”.
With access to a market of 2.3 billion consumers through multilateral free trade agreements, Georgia’s role as a transit state highlights its systemic importance in reshaping Eurasian trade dynamics, fostering mutual benefits for both nations.
