Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday featured at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Parliamentary Assembly session in Phnom Penh, dedicated to peace and security matters.
In his address, Samkharadze highlighted the great importance and relevance of Southeast Asia’s involvement in the process of resolving global issues.
“Southeast Asia is historically, culturally, and ethnically one of the richest and most diverse regions in the world, therefore its involvement in the process of resolving global issues is of great importance and relevance”, the Georgian official said.
He further emphasised the difficult situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions and thanked the Assembly member states for their strong support for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
He also discussed global security challenges, the Russian occupation, the ongoing developments in the Black Sea region, underlining the need to uphold the principles of international law in order to establish peace.
“We see worrying trends when some countries resort to brute force under the pretext of resolving the crisis, which in reality further exacerbates conflicts and international crises. The increase in the number of armed conflicts, coupled with the alarming, warlike rhetoric of high-ranking politicians, poses a serious threat to global security”, Samkharadze noted.
He further expressed the Georgian Government’s readiness to make its own contribution to the implementation of peace initiatives.
