David Bakradze, the Georgian Ambassador to the United Nations, on Wednesday said it was especially noteworthy that the United Nations resolution regarding Georgia was presented to the body with the strong support and co-sponsorship of partners, including the United States and the European Union member states.
Bakradze’s comments came after the United Nations General Assembly, during its 79th session in New York, on Tuesday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution on the “Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia”.
In his remarks with Imedi TV, Bakradze noted that it was a historic day for Georgia, marked by yet another record number of votes in support of the resolution submitted by Georgia.
“This is a resolution that, on the one hand, emphasises Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and on the other hand, supports the right of internally displaced persons and refugees to return to their homes with dignity. This year, the resolution had 64 co-sponsors and was supported by a record number of 107 countries”, he said.
Bakradze also emphasised that it was especially significant that the increase in support came from regions important to Georgia, such as Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
“This is the result of the Georgian Government’s consistent policy on the peaceful resolution of the conflict and issues of integration, and the international community sees and values this. A special role in this process is played by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, personally by the Minister and the Ministry’s leadership, whose personal involvement contributed to achieving this result”, he concluded.
