Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili on Wednesday addressed the recent comments made by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a Congressional hearing, stating that “the only conclusion we can draw from today's response is that there is no clear, established position regarding Georgia, particularly in the context of US national interests”.
Botchorishvili emphasised that the entirety of the hearing - and not just Rubio’s response - must be viewed through the lens of current US foreign policy, which, she noted, was now heavily centered around American national interests.
Commenting on the context of the hearing, Botchorishvili criticised the question posed by Congressman Joe Wilson, calling it “entirely based on disinformation”.
“Before analysing Rubio's response, we should first examine the nature of the question asked in Congress - a question posed by Joe Wilson, someone well-known to us, and one that was completely grounded in a disinformation narrative”, the FM said.
She further stressed that every statement Wilson made about Georgia was factually incorrect and detached from reality.
“None of his claims reflected the truth”, she said, stressing that it was crucial to understand the broader context in which Georgia was mentioned during the hearing, including misinformation about elections and the Georgian Government.
“If we assess Wilson's question - where exactly is the so-called anti-American Government in Georgia? Today, our Government's priorities are fully aligned, ideologically, with those of the current US administration”, the Minister continued.
She reiterated that any assessment of Rubio’s comments must be based on the full context of the discussion, including its focus areas and underlying motivations.
