Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday said that Georgia and Azerbaijan had transformed the South Caucasus region into an area of strategic significance.
In his remarks, Aliyev noted that relations with Georgia were undoubtedly carrying strategic importance.
“For us, relations with Georgia are clearly of strategic importance. Our nations are bound by historical ties and a shared past that was marked by a lack of freedom and independence. Today, we both enjoy sovereignty, and from the very beginning, Georgia and Azerbaijan demonstrated high-level mutual understanding, partnership, and friendship. It is thanks to the efforts of Georgia and Azerbaijan alone that the South Caucasus has become a region of strategic relevance”, the Azerbaijani President said.
The Azerbaijani leader emphasised that the geographic positioning of both countries, between the Caspian and Black Seas, has made them gateways for each other - and for broader regional and international cooperation.
“Located between the Caspian and Black Seas, we are a gateway for each other to connect with various regions and continents. I am confident that the future prospects are bright. Recent events also speak volumes about the close partnership and friendly relations between our two countries”, he continued.
Aliyev also highlighted the symbolic significance of recent diplomatic visits, noting that Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze chose Azerbaijan for his first official visit following the parliamentary elections.
