Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday said it was ideal for the United States and the European Union to cooperate on the security of the European Union, of which Georgia was a part.
In an interview with a Romanian outlet, Samkharadze was asked which of the two major actors - the EU or the US - Georgia would prioritize as a security partner. He responded that Georgia’s primary goal was to be a part of a secure European Union.
“As you know, Georgia aspires to join the European Union, and we see ourselves as part of European civilisation and Europe itself. Our priority as a country is to be part of a secure European Union”, the Parliament official said.
“However, I do not believe that the US will completely disengage from Europe. Clearly, Americans will always have a presence in Europe. Therefore, it is ideal for Georgia if the United States and the European Union collaborate on European security, of which Georgia is a part”, Samkharadze concluded.
