Elvira Kovač, the Chair of the European Integration Committee of the Serbian Parliament, on Tuesday expressed concern about the European Union’s inconsistent approach to enlargement, stating that while Georgia was making significant efforts, the EU appears politically uncertain.
In her remarks, Kovač highlighted the stagnation in Serbia’s EU accession process, growing Euroscepticism, and the broader challenges faced by candidate countries, including Georgia.
“We are sharing our experiences with the European Integration Committee and our Georgian friends from the Foreign Affairs Committee. It is important to see whether Europe remains open to new candidate countries. We tried to explain to our friends that we have been in this process for over a decade, and unfortunately, we have been unable to take any significant, visible steps forward in the past three years”, the official said.
She acknowledged that Georgia was actively working toward European integration.
“We fully understand Georgia’s situation. Georgia is also doing everything it can, but unfortunately, the EU has been somewhat lost in recent months. On the one hand, it is technically prepared for candidate countries, but on the other hand, political decisions prevent real progress. This is a major problem”, Kovač continued.
“I appreciate our Georgian friends because the Georgian people strongly support European integration. Unfortunately, in Serbia, Euroscepticism is increasing, even though our strategic plan remains joining the European Union”, she concluded.
