Irakli Mezurnishvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, emphasised the crucial role of China’s support in diversifying and strengthening Georgia’s economy, citing significant trade growth.
In an interview with China Global Television Network, Mezurnishvili discussed the growing strategic partnership between the two countries, highlighting the positive economic impacts of increased trade and investments and the value of China’s support in advancing Georgia's economy and its strategic position on the Silk Road.
“Georgia needs more diversification, more opportunities, and efforts to strengthen and elevate its economy. Economic support, investments, and the development of the Silk Road with China's assistance are invaluable. In this regard, it is noteworthy that over the past five years, Georgia and China have managed to increase trade turnover by 60 percent, which is a very positive result in such a short period, especially considering the challenges we have faced in recent years”, Mezurnishvili said.
The MP further highlighted the potential for further deepening trade relations, particularly with the growing popularity of Chinese products such as electric vehicles, solar panels, and furniture in Georgia.
He also highlighted Georgia's rapid economic growth, noting a 10 percent increase in the last four years, not only in traditional sectors like winemaking but also in emerging industries like IT.
“We believe there is an opportunity to further deepen trade relations, especially if we take into account the increased promotion of Chinese products, particularly electric vehicles, solar panels, and furniture. Georgia’s economy is developing at a very fast pace, with a 10 percent growth over just the last four years, which is a significant result. Growth is happening not only in traditional sectors, such as winemaking, but also in new industries, such as IT technologies”, he continued.
“The Free Trade Agreement between our two countries helps reduce barriers. Ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the Anaklia Deep Sea Port, facilitate this process. Reports from organisations like the World Bank underscore the importance of the Middle Corridor. The combination of unique products, growing market demands, and strengthened trade frameworks creates a highly favorable environment for the export of Georgian products to China”, Mezurnishvili concluded.
