Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, who is on an official visit to Romania, on Thursday said Romanian counterparts had once again reaffirmed their unconditional support for Georgia’s European Union membership.
The meeting with the President of the Romanian Senate Mircea Abrudean and the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies focused on the dynamics of bilateral relations between the two nations.
Both sides emphasised that the visit of the Georgian parliamentary delegation would contribute to strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation.
The parties also discussed the internal political situations in the two countries, including the parliamentary elections in Georgia and the presidential elections in Romania, which were later annulled.
The security situation in the Black Sea region was also a key topic, particularly the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Russia concerning Ukraine and their implications for the security of both Georgia and Romania.
“We discussed all key issues, including the situation in Georgia’s occupied regions, the EU enlargement process, and Georgia’s integration into the European Union. Our Romanian counterparts once again reaffirmed their unconditional support for Georgia’s EU membership. They noted that it is realistic for Georgia to implement all the necessary reforms required for EU accession by 2030”, Samkharadze said.
As part of the visit, Georgian Parliament representatives also held a meeting with Daniela Nicolescu, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, Digitisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism.
The meeting discussed strategic projects, including the Black Sea submarine cable project connecting Georgia and Romania, as well as the development and full utilisation of the Middle Corridor.
Both sides underscored that Georgia and Romania were strategically significant countries for the Middle Corridor project and shared a mutual interest in ensuring its operationalisation as an additional trade route linking Europe and Asia.
