Key areas of bilateral cooperation between Georgia and Turkmenistan were discussed on Friday in a meeting between the Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili and her Turkmen counterpart Rashid Meredov.
The meeting focused on strengthening political and economic relations, enhancing regional connectivity, and fostering collaboration in international organisations, the Georgian foreign office said.
Both sides emphasised the importance of high-level diplomatic engagements, highlighting the meeting between the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the President of Turkmenistan, as a key moment in bilateral relations.
“The meeting positively assessed the existing political relations and highlighted the importance of high-level and top-level visits, with particular emphasis on the meeting between the Prime Minister of Georgia and the President of Turkmenistan. Both sides underscored collaboration within international organisations, and the achievements and prospects for partnership in the trade, economic, transport, and energy sectors”, the statement said.
Special attention was given to regional infrastructure projects, particularly the Black Sea-Caspian Sea transport and transit corridor, as well as the Black Sea submarine cable project, in which Georgia was set to play a crucial role.
The two Ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to regional peace and stability, underscoring the long-standing friendly relations between Georgia and Turkmenistan.
Additionally, Meredov expressed gratitude for Georgia’s support of Turkmenistan on international platforms and reiterated Turkmenistan’s firm support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During the visit, the Georgian and Turkmen FMs signed two key agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation: the Cooperation Programme between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan for 2025-2026 and the Agreement between the Government of Georgia and the Government of Turkmenistan on Cooperation and Administrative Assistance in the Customs Sector.
