Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili on Thursday said the country was facing very serious challenges, and the first and foremost point of departure should be the future of the country, not what some MEP will write in a European Parliament resolution.
In her interview with Imedi TV, Botchorishvili discussed the latest resolution adopted by the European Parliament, and emphasised that the resolution would not determine Georgia’s future, including its relations with the EU.
“We have stated our desire. Georgia wants EU membership, Georgia wants a healthy and fair attitude, Georgia has very serious challenges and we cannot sacrifice our country just to hear nice words from EU institutions and Brussels”, the Minister said.
Botchorishvili also stressed the importance of protecting Georgia’s national interests, pointing to the broader geopolitical context.
“We need to protect our country, protect our country's interests, and what is happening around us today, even what is happening with Ukraine, I think gives a good answer to why we should care about our country. First of all, the starting point should be the future of our country, and not what some MEP will write in a resolution of the European Parliament, which [may] look different when some political situation changes and completely different priorities come to the agenda”, she continued.
She concluded by reaffirming the Georgian Government's stance, stating that it was acting in its best interest.
“Therefore, it can be said that what is happening, even in this situation, once again convinces us that we are acting absolutely correctly. The Georgian Government is acting to protect Georgia's interests, and this resolution cannot determine Georgia's future, even in relations with the European Union”, the Minister concluded.
