The European Parliament's political group, Europe of Sovereign Nations, which includes the German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) - a party publicly supported by Elon Musk - has registered a draft resolution in support of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
According to the resolution's text, Georgia is a sovereign state under international law with full authority to determine its own political system, hold elections, and govern itself without interference from foreign entities or international organisations.
The document also highlights that the parliamentary elections in Georgia held last October were conducted in broad compliance with national and international legal standards, adding that the Georgian people made a clear and democratic choice regarding the composition of their new Government.
The resolution emphasises that Georgia’s new government remains committed to European integration while ensuring respect for national sovereignty and democratic processes.
The authors of the resolution accuse the European Union of interfering in Georgia’s internal affairs, arguing that the EU's refusal to recognise the legitimacy of the elections and its support for opposition parties undermine the Union’s credibility and trust in the region.
The text further states that the EU’s pressure on Georgia, including threats of sanctions and the potential suspension of financial aid, represents an unjustified punitive approach that alienates a key strategic partner.
The draft resolution condemned the European Union’s refusal to recognise the legitimacy of the parliamentary elections in Georgia and its ongoing interference in the country’s domestic political affairs.
According to the document, the European Parliament affirms that the selection of political leadership in Georgia is solely the decision of the Georgian people.
