Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European Integration Committee, expressed hope on Tuesday that Brussels would reconsider its policy toward Georgia, arguing that the current approach undermines dialogue and fails to serve the European Union’s own interests.
Makhashvili’s comments were in response to remarks by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, who noted that relations with Georgia are complicated by the lack of contact with the government, adding that the EU intends to support the Georgian people directly rather than the authorities.
"It is deeply regrettable that Georgia’s constructive efforts and commitment to partnership have been met with such rhetoric from senior officials in Brussels. We remain steadfast in prioritizing our state and national interests. It is my hope that, in time, officials in Brussels will recognize that their current policy effectively abandons dialogue - a course that ultimately serves no one’s interests”, he said.
“I remain hopeful that we will have the opportunity to resume a constructive dialogue in the near future”, Makhashvili concluded.
