Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Wednesday said the state’s decision to take the leading role in the development of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port serves Georgia’s long-term national interests, describing the Government’s new initiative as a national decision.
Speaking to the media during his visit to Geneva, Kavelashvili said the decision reflected the actions of a responsible state and is based on Georgia’s strategic interests.
According to the President, Georgia’s approach throughout the decision-making process has been based on transparency, consideration of proposals from all interested countries and businesses, and openness to cooperation.
“Today, the state has the ability to develop the Anaklia Deep Sea Port on its own, and this is truly the best decision. It is important that the state will own the port and retain the controlling stake, while at the same time giving all interested parties the opportunity to pursue their interests”, Kavelashvili said.
He added that Georgia’s economic development, its reputation as a reliable partner, and growing international interest in the Middle Corridor create the conditions for broader participation by various countries in the Anaklia Port project.
