Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday congratulated fencer Sandro Bazadze on securing the world championship title at the 2025 World Fencing Championships held at Tbilisi Arena.
Kobakhidze, alongside the Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili and Government members, attended Bazadze’s competition and the award ceremony, where the 31-year-old Georgian defeated Frenchman Jean-Philippe Patrice with a score of 15:9, marking Georgia’s first-ever fencing world championship win.
By joint decision of the Georgian Prime Minister, the President, and Parliament Speaker, Bazadze will be awarded the Order of Honour for his historic achievement.
Kobakhidze also attended the championship’s opening ceremony, joined by Minister of Sport Shalva Gogoladze, President of the Georgian Fencing Federation Merab Bazadze, and President of the International Fencing Federation Abdelmonem El-Husseini, who addressed the 1,205 fencers from 120 countries participating in the tournament.
The event, hosted in Georgia’s capital from July 22 to July 30, underscores Tbilisi’s growing prominence as a global sports hub, with Bazadze’s victory celebrated as a milestone for Georgian sports.
