Georgia on Monday marked its Independence Day, a national holiday celebrated with various events across the capital city and the entire country.
This date commemorates the Act of Independence adopted by the National Council of Georgia on May 26, 1918, which declared the establishment of the First Democratic Republic of Georgia. The day has been officially celebrated since 1991, following the restoration of the country’s independence from the Soviet Union.
Although the historic 1918 declaration laid the foundation for Georgian statehood, it was soon followed by the Red Army invasion and annexation of the country. As a result, the government and the majority of the Constituent Assembly members were forced into exile.
Today, May 26 stands as a symbol of Georgia's enduring pursuit of sovereignty and democracy.
