Today marks the 36th anniversary of the tragic events of April 9, 1989, a pivotal moment in Georgia's modern history. In the early hours of that day, Soviet Union armed forces violently dispersed a peaceful pro-independence demonstration in front of the Parliament building in central Tbilisi, resulting in numerous casualties.
The brutal crackdown led to the deaths of 21 individuals, and hundreds more suffered poisoning from an unidentified gas used by the Soviet troops. The events of April 9th shocked the nation and further fueled the growing movement for Georgian independence.
The tragedy became a turning point in Georgia's struggle for independence. Exactly two years later, on April 9, 1991, the Supreme Council of Georgia declared the country’s restoration of independence from the Soviet Union.
April 9 is now remembered as both a day of national mourning and a symbol of Georgia's unwavering quest for freedom and sovereignty.
