A powerful natural disaster struck Telavi in Georgia’s Kakheti region, destroying infrastructure, flooding residential and public buildings, and causing a bridge to collapse, with emergency services working intensively to mitigate the consequences.
The situation deteriorated around 3:00 a.m., when continuous rainfall caused the Telavi ravine to overflow, sending a powerful mudflow carrying stones and debris through parts of the city.
The river changed its course, flowing over part of Kavkasioni Street and washing away asphalt in several sections, limiting vehicle movement.
Due to the continuous rain, the Telavi ravine overflowed. The mudflow that came down, carrying a large amount of stones and debris, completely destroyed the bridge connecting two streets.
Patrol police are managing traffic. Several families living near the ravine were evacuated due to flooding risks.
The gas supply system and power transmission lines were damaged, leaving thousands of subscribers without electricity and natural gas.
Platon Kalmakhelidze, the Governor of Kakheti, visited the affected area, and relevant services, supported by heavy machinery, are operating in emergency mode to address the damage.
The relevant services have been working in emergency mode for several hours already. Heavy machinery has also been involved in the liquidation works.
