Violence that was imported into our country’s reality has ultimately evolved into an attempted overthrow, which, among other factors, was encouraged from abroad, said on Thursday Archil Gorduladze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee.
In his remarks, Gorduladze noted that “those who incite violence bear no less responsibility than the direct perpetrators of the crimes”.
“We remember, for instance, the statement by the European Commission’s spokesperson, who expressed support for the rally where the government overthrow was announced in advance. We remember the statements made, for example, by Ms. Maia Sandu”, the official said.
He further stressed that not a single ambassador had condemned even the attempt to overthrow the government through violence.
“Therefore, the public clearly understands that these individuals share equal responsibility - no less responsibility lies with the so-called ambassadors who represent the emissaries of the ‘deep state’ in our country”, Gorduladze concluded.
On October 4, large-scale protests in Tbilisi escalated into a dramatic confrontation, as a group of radical demonstrators tried to storm the presidential palace. The unrest occurred on the same day Georgia held municipal elections.
Authorities detained at least five opposition figures, including Paata Burchuladze. They are now facing charges of plotting to overthrow the government - a potential offense that could carry lengthy prison sentences.
Government officials described the events as a failed coup attempt orchestrated with foreign backing. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze called the protests “an attempted overthrow of the constitutional order”.
