Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday said the failure to distance oneself from or condemn the attempted overthrow of the government and acts of violence can be easily interpreted as indirect, yet clear, support for such actions.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that in the days following the violent assault on the Georgian President’s Palace - an attack he described as a premeditated attempt to overthrow the government elected by the Georgian people - no organization or state, including the United States, the European Union, or specific EU member states, has issued a statement condemning or distancing themselves from the attempted coup.
“It has been four days since the violent assault on the Georgian presidential palace, the stated goal of which was to overthrow the Government elected by the Georgian people. However, during these days, no organisation or state that claims to instantly assess the internal political events in Georgia, criticize the country, and give it instructions - including the United States, the European Union, and specific European Union countries - has made a statement condemning and distancing itself from the attempt to overthrow the people's elected Government and the violent storming of the Georgian presidential palace”, the PM said.
“Moreover, the European Union, the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, and other entities have even dared to make statements of the opposite spirit. Naturally, the failure to separate and condemn the attempted overthrow and violence can easily be interpreted as an indirect but clear expression of support for the overthrow and violence”, he concluded.
