The 2026 Global Hunger Index report ranks Georgia among the 24 countries with the lowest levels of hunger, indicating that hunger is not considered a problem in the country.
Meanwhile, the European Commission has published a list of 98 countries worldwide where hunger remains a concern. Only three European countries - Ukraine, Moldova and Albania - were included on the list.
The Global Hunger Index is compiled by leading international organisations specialising in hunger assessment, including the international aid organisation Welthungerhilfe and the International Institute of Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV).
The index measures hunger severity based on four indicators: undernourishment, child wasting, child stunting and child mortality.
Georgia scored below 5 on the index’s 100-point scale, representing a strong result. According to the report, less than 2.5% of Georgia’s population is undernourished. Child wasting affects 4.7% of children, while 0.6% experience stunted growth. The mortality rate among children under five stands at 0.9%.
The report also highlights Georgia’s significant improvement in the European rankings since 2012, when the country was among the five worst-performing countries in Europe according to the Global Hunger Index.
