Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, said on Wednesday that Georgia does not compare itself to any country, “least of all” Moldova and Ukraine, which he said had chosen different paths towards European integration.
Makhashvili was responding to remarks by the Speaker of Moldova’s Parliament, who suggested that the Georgian Government was envious of Moldova.
In his comments, Makhashvili said Georgia stood exactly where the Georgian people deserved it to stand.
“The statements we hear from our colleagues are amusing. One thing must be stated clearly: Georgia does not compare itself to anyone, least of all to Moldova and Ukraine, which have chosen different paths towards European integration: one, it seems, involving the violation of territorial integrity, and the other involving unification with an entirely different country”, the official said.
“We periodically find it necessary to present specific statistics and data because we see unfair and slanderous assessments of Georgia. We consistently remind the public of the situation in the country regarding the fight against corruption, economic development, poverty reduction, and other areas. Let the public decide where Georgia truly stands today. If we look at the available figures and statistics, everything is clear. Georgia stands exactly where its people deserve to stand”, he concluded.
