Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee, said on Tuesday that Russia’s continued trade with the European Union since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars, was further evidence of what he described as the EU’s double standards.
“Given that trade with Russia continues across a range of sectors, including food products, it is entirely understandable that this propaganda cannot hold up for long. This was clear and obvious to the Georgian Government from the very beginning”, Kadagishvili said.
“Consequently, we stated from the outset that the course of action urged upon us - imposing direct sanctions on Russia - would be devastating for our economy. The issue of lifting the fuel embargo demonstrates once again that, while the war is a major factor, even greater material and geopolitical interests are also at play”, he concluded.
