Davit Matikashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, said on Tuesday that European bureaucrats were seeking to distance the Georgian people from their historic choice of Europe, arguing that Brussels’ approach was driven by subjective perceptions rather than objective assessments.
Matikashvili said European officials were attempting to convince the international community that Georgia was experiencing democratic backsliding. He argued that the country’s relations with Europe should be based on fairness and equality rather than subordination.
“European bureaucracy, through a policy that lacks an objective basis, is trying to convince the world, at the level of perceptions, that there is democratic backsliding in Georgia”, Matikashvili said.
“Our historic choice is Europe, but within a fair and equal relationship, not one between a master and a subordinate. This is effectively what the European bureaucracy wants, and the double standards that continue to be applied toward Georgia and the Georgian people reflect precisely that”, he added.
Matikashvili also noted that representatives of several EU member states had openly emphasised the need to deepen dialogue with Georgia.
“This is the result of the sound and pragmatic foreign policy pursued by our state under the Georgian Dream Government,” he concluded.
