Levan Machavariani, the First Deputy Chair of the Georgian Dream parliamentary faction, on Friday criticised the European Union’s current leadership, arguing that its policies fail to reflect the interests of European citizens.
Machavariani said the bloc’s current political direction had strayed from the values and principles on which the European Union was founded.
“For decades, the European Union has been built on values and principles. The closest ally that comes to mind is the United States, yet today the US does not want relations with the EU. For two years, Kaja Kallas, who oversees foreign affairs at the EU, has been unable to arrange even a one-minute meeting with Marco Rubio. They have a serious problem”, he said.
He criticised what he described as the promotion of ultra-left and pseudo-liberal ideologies, policies concerning LGBT issues, the abandonment of affordable energy resources, deindustrialisation and uncontrolled illegal migration.
“Brussels’ current ruling class does not serve the interests of the European people. The European people have not called for the spread of an ultra-left, pseudo-liberal ideology, LGBT propaganda, the abandonment of cheap energy resources and the resulting deindustrialisation, or uncontrolled illegal migration that has overwhelmed Europe”, Machavariani noted.
“These are not the demands of the European people, and Europeans have awakened - in Germany, Iceland and France. We are seeing many examples of people demanding that their ruling classes pursue their interests. Today, however, the interests of the European people are not being served”, he continued.
Machavariani also attributed the EU’s current approach to what he described as the “deep state” and unelected bureaucrats.
“This is a policy imposed from outside by what is known as the so-called deep state - as the administration of Donald Trump calls these forces. It is a policy pursued by the current ruling class, by these unelected bureaucrats who are here today and will be gone tomorrow”, he concluded.
